The context you need, when you need it

When news breaks, you need to understand what actually matters — and what to do about it. At Vox, our mission to help you make sense of the world has never been more vital. But we can’t do it on our own.

We rely on readers like you to fund our journalism. Will you support our work and become a Vox Member today?

Buckle Up! Vice Media CEO Shane Smith Is Coming to Code/Media.

He’s launching his own TV network -- right after he comes onstage and tells us about it.

Peter Kafka covered media and technology, and their intersection, at Vox. Many of his stories can be found in his Kafka on Media newsletter, and he also hosts the Recode Media podcast.

Just because we keep saying it doesn’t mean it’s not true: Next month’s Code/Media conference brings together the most interesting people at the intersection of media and technology.

Like this guy, for instance.

Shane Smith is the swashbuckling founder and CEO of Vice Media, which started as a punk magazine and is now one of the highest flying new media properties in the world. He’ll be appearing with us shortly before launching his most ambitious project yet: Viceland, a 24-hour cable news network, backed by Disney and Hearst’s A&E Networks.

It’s the latest example of the high-wire act Smith excels at — building edgy properties that appeal to both young, media-savvy consumers and the media companies that want to reach them. And we’re delighted he’s joining us onstage for a freewheeling, no-holds-barred interview.

Smith will be one of many excellent speakers we’ve previously announced, from Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton to FanDuel CEO Nigel Eccles.

And like all of the Re/code events, at Code/Media you’ll find the conversation offstage just as interesting. That’s where you’ll get a chance to meet other entrepreneurs, investors and executives trying to figure out how to take advantage of the opportunities created as technology remakes the media landscape.

You can join them, along with Kara Swisher, Walt Mossberg and me, for two days at the fabulous Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Calif., on Feb. 17 and 18. Register here and we’ll see you there.
