Watch a Tesla drive itself on local streets

If your Tesla is in production now or you plan to order a Tesla soon, all it will take is a series of over-the-air updates to make it a fully self-driving robot car, the company announced late Wednesday. That is to say, you’re essentially buying the carcass of a robot car with fewer robot functionalities.

While consumers won’t be able to let their cars take over the wheel in the immediate future, Tesla wanted to show off just how well its newly equipped vehicles could handle driving on local streets. Today’s Teslas are typically limited to driving semi-autonomously on freeways.

Notably, as the car drives around, it only comes across the occasional pedestrian though it does navigate around other manually driven vehicles.
