Facebook is telling people that they are dead

Are you alive? Are you sure?

Facebook is telling a lot of people that they’re dead. Many users have received a notification on top of their profile that reads: “Remembering Johana. We hope people who love Johana will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate her life.”

My colleague, Peter Kafka, has also been pronounced dead. Rest in peace, us. [Update: It’s fixed. See below.]

(I assure you, we are alive and well.)

The Facebook-simulated rapture does not really discriminate and has also taken Mark Zuckerberg’s life. It’s not happening to everyone, though. My other colleague Jason Del Rey was somehow spared.

We reached out to Facebook and are waiting to hear back.

Update: It seems many people who were pronounced dead by Facebook have been resurrected. Here’s Facebook’s official statement:

”For a brief period this morning, a message that was meant for memorialized profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts. This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it.”
