The context you need, when you need it

When news breaks, you need to understand what actually matters — and what to do about it. At Vox, our mission to help you make sense of the world has never been more vital. But we can’t do it on our own.

Starz is adding music, courtesy of Spotify, to its video app

Some songs to go with your shows.

Watch the movie. Then listen to the soundtrack.

Not a new idea.

But what about: Watch the movie. Then listen to the soundtrack — using the same app?

And now you can do it, if you have subscriptions to Starz, the premium pay TV service, and Spotify, the streaming music service.

A new integration live in Starz’ mobile app today gives users the ability to listen to soundtracks and related playlists powered by Spotify without leaving the app. Spotify subscribers will be able to listen to the entire songs for, say, an episode of “Power”; non-subs can hear 30-second previews.

Starz says it will also check out what you’re listening to on Spotify, and suggest movies and shows that reflect your musical taste. If, say, you listen to a lot of hip-hop, it may tell you about “Power.”

My hunch is that it would tell you about “Power” regardless, since “Power” is a hit for Starz.

For Spotify, the integration is one of many it has made with third-party apps over the years. Tinder users, for instance, can play “Get Lucky” (or whatever they want) while they swipe.

And for Starz, the tie-up is the first of what it hopes will be several deals aimed at making its app, and thus its subscription service, more sticky. If it gets a lot of these, it could be interesting.
