Online shoppers spent about $3.45 billion online on Cyber Monday, setting a record for the largest day in U.S. e-commerce history, according to Adobe. The record marks a 12 percent increase over the same day last year, with smartphones accounting for more than one out of every five sales.

At the same time, the total was just 3 percent higher than that of Black Friday, as the two big days of discounts become indistinguishable from each other. Retailers run the risk of further eroding margins as they cut prices throughout Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend to compete with Amazon and other aggressive shopping sites.

Top-selling items included the Sony Playstation 4, Samsung 4K TVs, Lego sets and the Pie Face game.

Overall, total November e-commerce sales in the U.S. are up just 7.6 percent year over year. Uncertainty around the U.S. presidential election has affected consumer spending, Adobe has previously said.
