Trump’s victory sparks dozens of protests across country

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of more than a dozen American cities Wednesday night amid a wave of shock and anger over Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.

Demonstrations have been reported in New York City, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, Austin, Boston, and Washington, DC, among other cities.

Shortly after 9:30 pm, protesters in the nation’s capital were marching toward the White House. Numerous flag burnings were reported throughout the country as well, including on some university campuses.

As of close to 10 pm, Trump’s campaign hadn’t commented on the protests.

Earlier on Wednesday, there had also been jubilant crowds in both New York City and in Washington, DC, to celebrate Trump’s victory, according to CNN. But the bigger demonstrations were clearly mobilized to protest Trump’s victory.

Several thousand anti-Trump demonstrators have shut down major intersections in Chicago, blocking traffic and staging a rally outside of Trump Tower, according to DNA Info.

Freedom First International, a social justice group that helped organize the demonstration in Chicago, released a statement calling for the emergency protest to “resist [the] outcome” of the presidential election:

In New York City, huge swaths of Sixth Avenue were completely overrun by protesters, Union Square was inundated with rally-goers, and crowds descended on Trump Tower.

The protest beginning in Union Square in New York City has moved all the way up toward Times Square, according to Vox’s Liz Plank, who is at one of the protests in New York City.
