Meet the New Boss: Dan Frommer Is Re/code’s Editor in Chief

As Re/code has grown and morphed, we have always been on the lookout for great talent to take the site to a new level.

That’s why I’m very excited to announce that we’ve hired Dan Frommer as the new editor in chief of Re/code. Dan brings our site the energy, curiosity and tech-savvy we need to succeed in digital publishing, an industry that gets more exciting — and challenging — daily.

Dan has been working in online publishing, and covering technology, for more than a decade. Most recently, he was technology editor at Quartz, the global business news site from Atlantic Media.

We’ve been longtime fans of his work there and at other publications, and while we can tell you that we have a mutual admiration society, we’ll let Dan speak for himself, when he wants to: He’s currently on a well-deserved vacation. (Hurry back, Dan!)

But let us fill you in a little: In 2007, Dan helped create Silicon Alley Insider, the tech- and media-focused news site that grew to become Business Insider. He later launched and edited his own independent news site, SplatF, and founded City Notes, an online travel startup.

Dan is a guy who loves words and pictures, but he’s also intensely interested in the mechanics of delivering them to readers. (If you want to get him going, have a chat with him about the merits of distributing news on mobile websites vs. apps — he has built both.)

Dan is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He lives in Brooklyn, but he’s going to be on a plane to San Francisco and Silicon Valley quite often. Which he doesn’t mind, because Dan is a pro flyer.

Ken Li, our founding editor in chief, is moving on from the company. We’re very grateful for the work he did leading the editorial staff after getting us launched, from scratch, just two years ago.
