Apparently, we’re going to have to start referring to controversial topics getting “the John Oliver treatment,” as the HBO funnyman did an explainer of the Apple-FBI boondoggle nearly as epic as his #MakeAmericaDrumpfAgain takedown of Donald Trump. This time, the topic taken down was the notion that our data is ever safe, like ever, or that criminals can’t hide their communications regardless of Apple’s help or lack thereof.

Another home run for the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” as he explains, hilariously, the real problem with the encryption debate.

“The government is essentially demanding that [Apple] come up with a cheat code for their top-selling iPhone game, ‘Fuck, What’s My Passcode,’ rated E for everyone,” Oliver said, in a very neat assessment of the situation surrounding the locked iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters.
Alternating concise and clear nuggets of information with lol-inciting quips, Oliver included a beautiful recap of the ’90s version of this folderol, the Clipper Chip.
