On Thursday, Fox released a new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, the last filmic chapter in its X-Men reboot trilogy. Like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse will pit superpowered beings against one another — in this case, mutant against mutant. (In the comic books, most of the mutant characters who appear in this movie as villains are actually good guys.)
Watch: the new trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse shows off its mutant matchups
One of the biggest questions about Apocalypse is how Xavier’s mutants — Cyclops, Jean Grey, Mystique, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Quicksilver — will stack up against Apocalypse’s four horsemen (horse-people?): Psylocke, Magneto, Storm, and Angel. On paper, it’s not really a fair fight since Xavier’s team is a little young and a little green.
There's a taste of the matchup in this new trailer as we see the mutants going head to head. Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) have a fight scene, as do Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Angel (Ben Hardy). Psylocke (Olivia Munn) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) are dueling too. From the trailer it's still a little hard to pinpoint how Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), a cosmic powerhouse in the comic books, will factor in.
That leaves Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) — who also happen to be played by the movie's biggest stars — to tangle with each other.
X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27.
