Capital Gains: Snapchat Raises a Flat Round, DIY Landlords and More Funding News

Snapchat keeps the same valuation it scored last May.

Todd Bernard

Snapchat avoided a down round and augmented reality and education apps raised money, as did meal kits and a company that lets you become a landlord without any of the obligation. Here are funding headlines from this past week:

  • Snapchat landed a new $175 million investment from Fidelity Investments at a $16 billion valuation, which is the same valuation it scored in a $537 million funding round last spring. Flat valuations aren’t generally considered a good thing, but in this cash-strapped environment it’s better than a down round.
  • London-based augmented reality startup Blippar raised $54 million from a group of investors that includes Qualcomm and Malaysian government investment fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Financial Times).
  • WellDoc, a medical startup that makes software to manage chronic diseases like diabetes, added $8 million from Johnson & Johnson’s VC arm to its now $29.5 million Series B funding round. Existing investors include Merck and Samsung Ventures (New York Business Journal).
  • Israeli 3D-printing company XJet raised $25 million in a new round of funding co-led by private equity fund Catalyst CEL and Autodesk (Reuters).
  • YourMechanic, which dispatches auto mechanics for house calls, raised $24 million in new funding from SoftBank Capital, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, SAIC, Verizon Ventures, Silicon Valley Bank and other investors (Fortune).
  • Real estate marketplace Roofstock, which lets customers purchase already-leased single-tenant homes, announced its launch and a $13.25 million Series A round last week. Investors include Marc Benioff, Ron Conway’s SV Angel, Opendoor CEO Eric Wu, Stubhub founder Jeff Fluhr and Bain Capital Ventures.
  • LightSail, which is sort of a combination digital library teaching app for classrooms, raised $11 million in a Series B round whose investors include Intuit co-founder Scott Cook and Jeff Bezos (Wall Street Journal).
  • European job recruiting startup CornerJob, which focuses on blue-collar workers, raised $10 million in a Series A funding round from Sabadell Capital, Bonsai Venture Capital, Cube Investments, Ithaca Investment, Samaipata Ventures, Media Digital Ventures and others (TechCrunch).
  • Swedish startup Mapillary makes something like an open-source Google StreetView; it raised $8 million in a new round. Participants in the investment include Atomico, Sequoia Capital, LDV Capital and PlayFair (TechCrunch).
  • Hungryroot, a vegetarian meal-kit delivery startup, raised $3.7 million from a group of investors that includes Lightspeed Venture Partners, Lerer Hippeau Ventures and Crosslink Capital (Eater).
