If, upon seeing Larry David’s Bernie Sanders impersonation on Saturday Night Live this past season, your immediate thought was that you’ve been missing David’s particular brand of ornery comedy, here’s some news you may appreciate: HBO has just announced that Curb Your Enthusiasm is returning for a ninth season.

The announcement comes a full five years after the comedy — the longest-running show in the history of HBO — wrapped its eighth season in 2011.
Curb was never formally canceled; David himself decided to step back and take a break.
But fans never gave up hope that Curb would continue at some point, and David has spent the past five years fielding questions about a possible return. In 2014, he told a crowd at Carolines comedy club in New York that he wasn’t sure if his “ideas are gonna be good enough for a whole season.” In 2015, he told Howard Stern that “the odds are stacked against” a return, though he wasn’t “ruling it out.”
But this year, rumors of a ninth season of Curb intensified, with David’s co-star J.B. Smoove saying earlier this month that David had — uncharacteristically — mentioned the possibility to him.
Now HBO has confirmed that David is actually, for real, in for another season. In a press release, David gave his reasons for reviving Curb in true Larry David form: “In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”
With at least five years between seasons eight and nine — HBO has not yet announced a target premiere date for the latter — David will have plenty of stories to draw from, not to mention his newfound fame as a premier Sanders impersonator. If anyone can find an existential crisis in that, it’s definitely him.
