Roger Ailes is reportedly done at Fox News as more female employees allege sexual harassment (updated)

The Murdochs are in agreement.

In his years running Fox News, Roger Ailes has weathered many storms. But it appears now that his good fortune has run out, in the aftermath of an ex-Fox anchor’s legal filing against Ailes for sexual harassment.

New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman, who literally wrote the book on Ailes, reports that the ruling Murdoch triumvirate (father Rupert, sons Lachlan and James) at Fox News parent company 21st Century Fox plans to kick Ailes to the side. Sherman says the only question is whether it will happen during or after the Republican National Convention.

Earlier this month, former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against Ailes, claiming that he sexually harassed her and pursued a campaign of gender-based discrimination that resulted in her exit from the network. Shortly after Carlson’s lawsuit became public, at least six more women came forward to share allegations of their own against Ailes.

Ailes has made serious dough for the Murdochs over the years (including $1 billion in profit last year), which is what has kept him safe despite his long-running feud with Rupert’s son Lachlan. But the cable TV business is a lot worse off now than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

While Carlson’s lawsuit might not ever make it to trial, it has given Ailes’s enemies a pretext to get rid of him while he’s at his weakest.

Fox News spokesperson Irena Briganti did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for 21st Century Fox said that “this matter is not yet resolved and the review is not concluded.”

Update: A day after first reporting that Ailes was out, Gabriel Sherman now says that Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly has also told investigators from Paul, Weiss that Ailes previously sexually harassed her. Here are two particularly notable bits from his new piece:

A representative for 21st Century Fox declined to comment.
