As Apple and Spotify continue to jockey for position in the Great Music Streaming War, they’re investing in video content to augment their music offerings in order to attract new subscribers.
James Corden’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ series is coming exclusively to Apple Music
It’s more video ammo for the battle against Spotify.
That’s why Apple Music is working on a video series starring Dr. Dre, and why the company is today announcing a deal with CBS to exclusively host a new show based on the popular “Carpool Karaoke” segment from “The Late Late Show,” with a to-be-determined host and premiere date.
“Carpool Karaoke” is exactly what it sounds like; celebrities ride around in cars (like Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee”) and sing pop songs. The segment is going to be a full-fledged series, with 16 episodes.
According to a press release from CBS, “Carpool Karaoke” has more than 830 million YouTube views since debuting a year ago, and its episode starring Adele garnered 119 million views in six months.
Outside of Apple Music, the company has been inching its way into original video programming for a while. In March, for example, the New York Post reported that Apple is at work on a TV show about app developers.
And while the company isn’t currently working to push out its own “skinny” cable TV bundle, Apple expects to get there sometime soon.
