Europe hits Apple with a $14.5 billion tax bill | Recode Daily: August 30, 2016

.The European Commission has levied a $14.5 billion tax penalty against Apple, arguing that Apple owes unpaid taxes as a result of a sweetheart deal with Ireland that amounts to illegal state aid. Both Apple and Ireland have said already that they would appeal.

.Apple sent out invitations (cryptic, as usual) for an event on Sept. 7 in San Francisco at which it will unveil the new iPhone (expected to include a dual-lens camera, among other features) and possibly an updated Apple Watch. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that Apple is prepping updates to the iPad and Mac laptops and desktops, some of which could launch as soon as October.

.The FBI has warned election officials across the country to tighten their computer security after finding evidence that foreign hackers had penetrated voter registration databases in Illinois and Arizona. Voter information is regularly targeted by criminal hackers.

.What with Google and Uber both working on self-driving car technology, the presence of senior Alphabet exec David Drummond on Uber's board of directors had gotten increasingly awkward; on Monday, Uber confirmed that Drummond has stepped down.

.After all the hoo-ha last spring over whether the human editors of Facebook's Trending Topics were suppressing conservative news, Facebook gave most of the job to an algorithm last week. The algorithm promptly stepped in it, posting a fake story about Fox News' Megyn Kelly getting fired for supporting Hillary Clinton.
