Time to add three more to the list: Investor Marc Andreessen, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards will be joining us onstage at Code.
Code is Recode’s signature event, where we bring the most important people in tech and media together and get them to tell us what’s on their minds, via three days of candid, unscripted interviews. Last year’s speaker list included everyone from Jeff Bezos to Sheryl Sandberg to Nick Denton, and we ended up talking about everything from artificial intelligence to ... Donald Trump.
Past performance doesn’t predict future results, but there’s a very good chance we’ll hit some of those topics this year, too. But in a very different context.
Marc Andreessen isn’t shy about expressing his opinions, even if he has taken a Twitter hiatus. Though he’s now best known as the co-founder of heavyweight VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, Andreessen helped remake the world in the 1990s when he co-created Mosaic, the first mainstream web browser, and co-founded Netscape.
A few years ago, Reed Hastings seemed focused on competing with HBO. Now he looks as though he has set his sights on everyone who makes and sells video: Hollywood, U.S. TV networks and TV distributors around the world. He moves fast: Ten years ago, Hastings didn’t have a streaming business. Now he has more than 93 million subscribers in 190 countries.
Under Cecile Richards’s leadership, Planned Parenthood’s list of supporters has doubled to nine million while the nonprofit provides health-care services to 2.5 million people a year. Now Richards needs to navigate a political landscape that has changed significantly in recent months, but she knows her way around: She’s the daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards, and she served as deputy chief of staff for House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.
