UPS shooting in San Francisco: what we know so far
The gunman fatally shot three victims before killing himself.
The shooter, a UPS driver, has been taken to San Francisco General Hospital after shooting himself. His condition is not known.
This shooting comes just hours after one of the top Republicans in Congress, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), was shot and wounded in Northern Virginia, along with four others.
The incident in San Francisco is still unfolding, and we will update this post as we get more information.
Here’s what we know
- Shortly after 9 am Pacific time today, the San Francisco Police Department tweeted that there had been a shooting at 17th and Vermont Streets. They added that commuters should expect street closures and traffic delays.
- At 9:30 PT, the department tweeted to ask people still in the area of the shooting to “shelter in place.” The shelter in place was lifted at 11:30 PT.
- UPS employees were seen being escorted out of the building by police, and some were rescued from the rooftop of the building.
- The police have taken back control over the UPS building, per a statement from UPS. The police confirmed this in a tweet, which said they’ve “contained” the incident.
- Six people have sustained gunshot wounds and four were killed, including the shooter.
- UPS spokesperson Steve Gaut said the shooter “turned the gun on himself.” This was later confirmed by San Francisco Deputy Police Chief Mikail Ali to CNN.
- Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin told local reporters that two guns were recovered at the scene and that the department does not think that this incident is related to terrorism.
What we don’t know
- The condition of the shooter.
- Who the shooter is or what his or her motives were. We know that the shooter was a UPS driver, but it’s not clear why he started shooting at his co-workers.
