Hulu is adding HBO just in time for ‘Game of Thrones’

It’s not TV. It’s online.

Just in time for “Game of Thrones,” you will now be able to get HBO programming through Hulu for $15 a month. Of course, for the same price you can already get HBO Now, HBO’s standalone online streaming service.

Despite the marginal convenience of getting one bill or installing only one app, there doesn’t seem to be any benefit to getting HBO from Hulu versus elsewhere. You can already pay extra to get HBO on any number of skinny bundles, including Amazon Prime Video, PlayStation Vue, AT&T DirecTV Now and SlingTV. YouTube TV doesn’t offer HBO but would like to. Of course, HBO is also available for subscription on good old-fashioned TV.

Hulu itself has gotten into the business of making high-production TV with series like this year’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The live TV and streaming service will also offer Cinemax for another $10. It already offers CBS-owned Showtime.
