House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has sent an updated invitation to President Donald Trump, inviting him to deliver the annual address in the House chamber on Tuesday, February 5, noting that the two agreed to the date earlier on Monday.
Pelosi’s invitation follows a highly contentious back-and-forth with the president over the SOTU address, during which she successfully pushed him to postpone as the government shutdown raged on earlier this month. At the time, Pelosi had argued there wasn’t sufficient security for the remarks to carry on as planned during the shutdown.
At Pelosi’s urging, Trump ultimately agreed to reschedule his address, which requires approval from both chambers of Congress to occur.
Now that the government is open again, it looks like they’ve both found the “mutually agreeable” date they were looking for.
