Late on Thursday night, Beyoncé surprised the world by releasing a new song, a remix of J. Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente” where she appears as a featured artist.

The singer has been keeping a low musical profile in 2017, only appearing as a guest star on a handful of tracks. That’s perhaps to be expected, since she recently gave birth to twins. But her relatively quiet musical year is just one part of what makes her collaboration on “Mi Gente” so tantalizing:
The other notable thing about the song, aside from Beyoncé’s participation, is that all proceeds from its sales will be donated to benefit “hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the other affected Caribbean islands.”

The singer’s plan to donate money to Puerto Rico, Mexico, and hurricane-affected Caribbean islands makes her the latest musician to speak out about the affected areas and the perceived lack of urgency from the US government in response to the disasters.
Earlier this month, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced the establishment of fundraising initiative called Somos Una Voz (We Are One Voice) to help raise money and awareness for those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Lopez also said she would be donating $1 million to the cause.
And this week, Rihanna has been tweeting at President Donald Trump, asking him where the US response has been in the wake of Hurricane Maria, urging him to not “let your people die like this”:
President Trump has said he will visit Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
