Avengers: Endgame’s new trailer introduces Captain Marvel to Thor and the Avengers

The dust has barely settled from Captain Marvel’s grand entrance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and her movie’s massive box office haul) and she’s already on to the next adventure: teaming up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Endgame.

On Thursday, Marvel released a brand new trailer for Endgame, the epic conclusion to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and, on a larger scale, the not-quite-final-but-decade-capping chapter of Marvel moviemaking that began with Iron Man in 2008.

The new trailer is definitely calibrated to keep this momentous occasion in mind. It showcases the respective journeys of Marvel’s big three heroes — Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor — via flashbacks from previous Marvel movies. We’re reminded of their pasts via glimpses of Thor’s rocky relationship with Odin, Cap’s fight in World War II, and Iron Man’s beginnings in the Afghanistan desert.

Then the trailer flanks those pasts with footage of the dire situation they’re all in now: trying to determine how to save all the lives that Thanos wiped out when he snapped his fingers at the end of Infinity War and eliminated half of all life in the universe. Cue shots of missing persons posters, abandoned cityscapes, and forlorn-looking Avengers.

In a voiceover, Cap says that the team has one more shot, and that they’ll never give up. What this Hail Mary turns out to be, no one’s sure — but the trailer suggests it might involve the remaining Avengers donning spacesuits.

Of course, that could also be a clever misdirection (this could be a shot from a return trip after rescuing Tony Stark and Nebula in space). Plus, the Avengers’ hairstyles and hair color in the trailer seem to indicate a time jump or two.

No matter what they’re up to, Cap and the non-dusted Avengers aren’t doing it alone, as members whom they thought were missing, like Ant-Man and Hawkeye, have joined the fray.

They’ve also got Captain Marvel helping out too. Thor, who calls the Stormbreaker hammer to his side like the Mjolnir, shares a moment with Captain Marvel in the final moments of the trailer.

Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Endgame, isn’t just significant because it will finish the story that began in Infinity War and presumably resurrect almost everyone who was dusted in that movie, but also because it’s a bookend chapter of sorts for the MCU, and portends to be the end for some of Marvel’s flagship actors, including Chris Evans.

Avengers: Endgame is scheduled to open in theaters on April 26, 2019.
