In a Monday morning interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway doubled down on President Donald Trump’s baseless claim that Barack Obama wiretapped his phones in October.
Kellyanne Conway on wiretapping claims: “I’m not in the job of having evidence”
“I don’t believe people are using the microwave to spy on the Trump campaign. However...”
Asked to explain what evidence Trump had for the allegation, Conway responded:
“Chris, I’m not Inspector Gadget. I don’t believe people are using the microwave to spy on the Trump campaign. However, I’m not in the job of having evidence. That’s what investigations are for.”
The day after Trump accused Obama of wiretapping him, FBI Director James Comey — who would have evidence if such a conspiracy had taken place — phoned the Department of Justice asking someone to publicly refute the allegations. The DOJ declined. In her defense of Trump’s remarks on Monday, Conway insinuated that the president can make such a claim without any proof and then call on Congress to investigate.
As a major spokesperson for Trump, Conway has come under fire for making false claims on national television. Monday’s interview does little to improve her image. Throughout the back and forth with Cuomo, Conway evaded questions by giving non-answers or changing the subject, classic Conway moves.
