How an MS Paint artist made this picture

Pat Hines is using MS Paint for all the illustrations in his book. Here’s how he does it.

Phil Edwards
Phil Edwards was a senior producer for the Vox video team.

Pat Hines used a very unusual tool to illustrate his book, Camp Redblood: Microsoft Paint. The video above shows a time lapse of his process while exploring his influences, which range from Back to the Future posters to Tin Tin artist Hergé.

At first glance, using Paint seems like an inferior choice to advanced photo editing programs like Adobe Photoshop, but it turns out that the limitations helped Hines develop a unique artistic voice.

Even though MS Paint has been downgraded to a free Windows store add-on, Hines doesn’t plan to switch anytime soon.

If this video’s not enough MS Paint for your day, we’ve uploaded the full, real-time capture of Hines’s process on YouTube. Just block some time out in your calendar — the entire picture took 15 hours to create.
