  • Police have taken an individual into custody. The shooter, a white male, used a shotgun. At this time, little is known about the shooter or a potential motive. [Associated Press]
  • The man in custody is reportedly not cooperating with police, declining to give them his name. The man did not have his ID on him, police said. [David Begnaud via Twitter]
  • The Capital Gazette’s offices are located in Annapolis, Maryland. The daily newspaper employs about 55 people, according to its website. [NYT / Daniel Victor and Maya Salam]
  • Reporters in the newsroom shared harrowing and horrifying details on social media. When the shooting started, a summer intern named Anthony Messenger wrote, “Active shooter 888 Bestgate please help us.” [Anthony Messenger via Twitter]
  • Phil Davis, another Capital Gazette reporter who was in the newsroom at the time of the shooting, said that the gunman had shot through the glass door to the newsroom and proceeded to open fire on multiple people. [Phil Davis via Twitter]
  • ”There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload,” Davis said. [Phil Davis via Twitter]
  • The newspaper reported on the shooting that took place inside its own building, and some reporters and editors were reportedly still trying to get tomorrow’s paper out after the shooting occurred. [John Harwood via Twitter]

Helsinki or swim?

  • President Donald Trump is preparing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a one-on-one meeting next month. The setting? Finland. [NYT / Andrew Kramer and Eileen Sullivan]
  • The summit is something that Trump has been wanting for a while, and it’s sure to have America’s European allies sweating at the appearance of America and the Kremlin growing closer. (Trump hasn’t exactly been making friends with the EU and Canada lately.) [Vox / Alex Ward]
  • Because Trump is being Trump, he’s back to suggesting that maybe Russia didn’t actually meddle in the 2016 US election (an assessment that puts Trump at direct odds with US intelligence officials). [CNN / Kevin Liptak]
  • There’s historical precedent for a US-Russia meeting; the US, Russia, and many other nations met in Finland back in 1975 to help defuse tensions over nuclear weapons and human rights issues. But there was a clear agenda going into that meeting, unlike the one between Trump and Putin next month. [The Atlantic / Reid Standish]

  • Elon Musk spent the day arguing with Twitter users over an image of a unicorn farting magical gas into an electric car. Because that’s the world we live in now. [Buzzfeed / Patrick Smith]
  • It’s the cigarette impossible to quit — the air quality is so bad in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Beijing that around 150,000 people are dying each year from pollutants. [The Daily Beast / Erin Biba]
  • Rapper Cardi B had a Bronx-themed baby shower in Atlanta on Tuesday night. Bardi pulled out all the stops, including a “Bardi Baby Bodega.” You can take the girl out of the Bronx ... [Highsnobiety / Candice Nembhard]
