Of course Donald Trump got into a holy war with the pope — and could win

In what was supposed to be a bad thing, Francis said Trump’s views on immigration and his plan to build a US-Mexico wall showed that he was “not Christian.” The remarks come just two days before the South Carolina Republican primary, but Trump seemed unfazed by the possibility of negative publicity.

The amazing thing is not just that Trump was praising someone he is now publicly fighting with; that’s par for the course for Trump. (He also apparently wanted the pope to be on The Apprentice.)

Trump fired off a statement in response almost immediately that ripped the pope’s comments as “disgraceful” and said the pope will think differently about him after the Vatican is attacked by the Islamic State.
