Inequality, explained by Amy Poehler in a My Little Pony parody

Dylan Matthews
Dylan Matthews was a senior correspondent and head writer for Vox’s Future Perfect section. He is particularly interested in global health and pandemic prevention, anti-poverty efforts, economic policy and theory, and conflicts about the right way to do philanthropy.

If you want to learn about economic inequality in the US, you should obviously start with our explainer on income inequality and video on wealth inequality. But if you want to learn about economic inequality by way of an animated My Little Pony parody made by Anchorman/Step Brothers director Adam McKay and featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Billy Eichner, Andy Richter, and Sarah Silverman, the above clip is probably your best bet.

The video was made as part of We The Economy, an intriguing project from Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's Vulcan Productions which is creating 20 short films from well-known directors to explain various aspects of the economy. Others include a Federal Reserve explainer directed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke and featuring Mad Men's Michael Gladis, and one by Chop Shop director Ramin Bahrani starring Patton Oswalt and Mo Collins that uses lemonade stands to illustrate the concept of regulatory capture. The group has also put up a variety of clips from economics journalists doing more traditional explanations, like this one from the New York Times' Neil Irwin on why the middle class is important for economic growth.
