The context you need, when you need it

Watch: a new cable show re-enacts “Amish hauntings.” There’s a kid. And a pig’s head.

Emily St. James was a senior correspondent for Vox, covering American identities. Before she joined Vox in 2014, she was the first TV editor of the A.V. Club.

We don’t post a lot of upcoming TV show or movie clips here at Vox, because most clips don’t work without context. But we’re not sure this clip from Destination America’s new show Amish Haunting actually needs context.

It has everything. Multiple demonic possessions. Crime scene re-enactments straight out of Unsolved Mysteries. A haunted doll. Buggies flying down the road in the dark of night. Buckets of blood. Amish people. And, in the piece de la resistance, a child wearing a pig’s head over his own. It’s like somebody put every low-budget reality show on cable through a wood chipper, then assembled the pieces back together at random.

There’s an element of tacky horror present in all of this, but it’s the kid in the pig’s head that does it. The show keeps cutting back to it, over and over, and it finally just becomes utterly hilarious. If you are completely disturbed by scary movies, then maybe skip this, but we think you’ll find it campily entertaining instead.

And there’s more where it came from, we hope. Amish Haunting debuts Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern on Destination America, right before the premiere of Ghost Asylum, another show that exists.
