Apple shipped a total of 3.6 million Apple Watches in the spring quarter, just behind the 4.4 million devices shipped by Fitbit, according to IDC.
The Cupertino technology giant’s entry into the wearables market goosed overall shipments for the category of devices. IDC estimates 18.1 million wearables shipped in the spring quarter, up 223 percent from a year ago, when 4.6 million million units shipped.
“Anytime Apple enters a new market, not only does it draw attention to itself, but to the market as a whole,” IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said in a statement. “Its participation benefits multiple players and platforms within the wearables ecosystem, and ultimately drives total volumes higher.”
