Apple Releases OS X El Capitan Desktop Software Wednesday

The update to the operating system features smarter Spotlight search, and improved Notes and Mail.

Re/code

Apple’s new OS X El Capitan desktop operating system will be available Wednesday as a free upgrade for Mac users.

This is an incremental update of Apple’s desktop software, with a few added conveniences.

The update to the operating system features smarter Spotlight search, which understands commonly phrased queries like “find the presentation I worked on yesterday.” The new Mail app recognizes names or events in a message and prompts you to add them to your contacts or calendar. The updated Notes app lets you drag and drop photos, videos and content from other apps (such as Maps locations or Safari Web links) into a single document.

OS X El Capitan also improves system performance of the Mac, and includes enhanced international language support — including a new system font for both traditional and simplified Chinese.

This version of the operating system supports all Macs introduced in 2009 and later, and some older models.
