Apple Music now has 27 million subscribers

That’s up from 20 million in December.

Apple Music, the company’s subscription streaming service, now has 27 million paying subscribers, up from 20 million subscribers in December and 13 million a little more than one year ago.

That’s decent growth for Apple Music, which was launched just two years ago. Apple is also trying to supplement its music streaming service with TV-quality video shows, like a “Carpool Karaoke” spinoff it plans to release in August.

The hope is to differentiate its streaming service from competitors, like Spotify, which is still about twice as big as Apple Music with more than 50 million subscribers.

But Apple isn’t trying to differentiate entirely. At its WWDC conference on Monday, the company also announced new updates to Apple Music, including the ability to share playlists and songs with friends and see what others are listening to. Spotify already offered those features.

The new subscriber number was shared on Monday at Apple’s annual developers conference in San Jose. You can read more about everything that was announced here.
