It’s official: Amazon Prime Video is coming to Apple TV

The years-long freeze has thawed.

Amazon and Apple have finally come to an agreement to bring Amazon’s video app to the Apple TV streaming box, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the company’s developer conference on Monday.

Recode reported last month that the two sides were nearing a deal, and BuzzFeed News later reported that an agreement had been reached. It’s now official.

That means Amazon Prime Video subscribers will soon be able to stream TV shows and movies to their TV using an Apple TV device.

The popular Amazon video service had been one of the biggest holdouts from the Apple TV ecosystem, with CEO Jeff Bezos saying at last year’s Code Conference that the two sides had not agreed on “acceptable business terms.”

Up to now, “Amazon subscribers have only been able to watch their shows on Apple TV using Apple’s comparatively cumbersome Airplay system, which involves connecting another Apple product, like an iPhone, to an Apple TV using a Wi-Fi connection,” my colleague Peter Kafka wrote.

Recode previously reported that Amazon employees expect to see the app show up on Apple TV in the third quarter of this year. Cook did not announce a launch date on Monday.

BuzzFeed also reported last month that Amazon will begin selling Apple TV devices again, after removing them from its storefront nearly two years ago.
