Fortnite is generating more revenue than any other free game ever

It hit a record $318 million last month.

Fortnite: Battle Royale has brought in more revenue in a single month than any other game of its kind. The free-to-play game hit a new revenue record of $318 million in May, according to SuperData Research.

That puts Fornite well ahead of other breakout games like Pokémon Go and Clash of Clans, and it’s all the more spectacular when you realize the multi-platform game launched on consoles just eight months ago and on iOS just three months ago.

Since then, Fortnite has brought in more than $1.2 billion in revenue, all of which comes from nonessential in-app purchases, for stuff like clothing and dance moves.

Fortnite’s free-to-play model has attracted seasoned gamers and newcomers alike, amassing 125 million players in less than a year. The game also has a loyal eSports following in which people livestream their favorite Fortnite players, including celebrities like Drake.

Unlike 2016’s free-to-play hit Pokémon Go, whose revenue declined after a blockbuster launch, Fortnite revenue has continued to increase eight months after launch:

But the game’s epic growth is slowing.

May revenue rose just 7.6 percent, down from 32 percent in April, marking the slowest revenue growth month for the game. Most of that growth came from consoles, while iOS and PC revenue were flat. However, when Fortnite is finally released on Android this summer, growth could pick up again.
