Texas results for every midterm race
The Texas Senate race has garnered significant attention this cycle as progressive Rep. Beto O’Rourke strived to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. But the Texas Senate seat remained just out of reach for Democrats.
That said, a series of House seats in Texas also seen as possible pick-ups are still in Democrats’ hopes. Democrats have already unseated Rep. Pete Sessions and Republican incumbents in the Seventh, 22nd, 23rd and 31st are facing down very competitive races, according to Cook Political Report. Reps. John Culberson is among those defending their seats in districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016, with Democrats Lizzie Fletcher looking to unseat him. Democrats in the state Legislature are hoping to retake a slew of seats in districts that Clinton carried as well.
Amid all this, the governor’s race was an easy win for incumbent Republican Greg Abbott who was seeking a second term in a race against Democrat Lupe Valdez, a former Dallas County sheriff.
The state Legislature has notably been under Republican control for some time, and Daily Kos doesn’t expect that to change.
President Donald Trump’s popularity in Texas is solid, but a little underwhelming compared to its southern neighbors. Morning Consult finds his approval rating barely cracks 50 percent.
