The battlefield to control the House of Representatives is huge
Democrats took back the House. They needed to flip 24 seats to regain control of the chamber.
They did better than that. So far, Democrats have flipped 37 seats, and seven races still haven’t been called.
Democrats faced a difficult congressional map this year. Republicans’ landslide wins in the 2010 midterm cycle let the party gerrymander the congressional map, giving themselves an advantage. Democrats needed at least a 7-point advantage in votes nationally to have a shot at retaking the House — they got at least 7.5.
Democrats have repeatedly shown that they are more enthusiastic about voting in this midterm election than Republican voters are. There have been surges in primary turnout for Democrats, which indicates high levels of political involvement and enthusiasm. Democratic candidates have also been out-fundraising their Republican opponents across the country.
And historically, the president’s party is disadvantaged going into the midterm elections. Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity in his first years as president only compounded that problem for Republicans.
