Marvel released the biggest tease yet for its biggest movie of the year, during the biggest football game of the year. During Super Bowl 53, Marvel unleashed the second trailer for Avengers: Endgame, the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War and the culmination of more than a decade of Marvel superhero movies.

The Avengers aren’t going down without a fight.

In the trailer, what remains of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are dealing with the aftermath of Thanos’s finger snap at the end of Infinity War that wiped out half of all life in the universe. The world (an abandoned Citi Field is shown) is decimated and gloomy. Everyone has lost friends and family.
But not all hope is lost.
The Avengers took a punch, and now they’re regrouping. Captain America, Iron Man (with Nebula), Thor, Rocket, Black Widow, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and the rest of the living Avengers are training, plotting, and coming together with a plan.
Just what exactly that plan is … we’ll have to find out when the movie comes out on April 26.
Endgame’s first trailer dropped in December, and the second one is inevitably similar due to the storytelling consequences of revealing too much. Because Infinity War ended with a cliffhanger built around several famous Marvel characters evaporating into dust, Marvel can only feature its non-dusted heroes in Endgame’s marketing; otherwise, it risks spoiling the movie with even the smallest hints.
Case in point: The recent Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer centers on a non-dusted Peter Parker and Nick Fury, signaling that Endgame, which comes out a few months before Far From Home, will involve some kind of resurrection for those fallen heroes. We just don’t yet know how we’ll get to that result.
Directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Endgame will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes come back together (and back from the dust) to fight Thanos once again and, as the movie’s title implies, finish the story that began in Infinity War and reveal the fates of the Avengers. The film is poised to cap off the first phase of Marvel’s interlocking superhero movies, and portends to be the end for some of Marvel’s flagship actors, including Chris Evans.
Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters on April 26.
